Admissions

  • Do I need to have a Bachelor's/Master's degree in a related field to apply? Is there a minimum GPA requirement?

Our faculty members have diverse research backgrounds spanning multiple disciplines. Applicants with degrees in a broad range of science and engineering fields are welcome to apply. We recommend reviewing our faculty profiles to identify research areas aligned with your academic interests.

We do not apply a fixed minimum GPA threshold. Admission decisions are based on a holistic evaluation of each candidate's academic record, research experience, statement of purpose, letters of recommendation, and interview performance.

  • As an international student, do I need to take the Chinese National Postgraduate Entrance Examination? Or is it an application-based admission?

International students are admitted through anapplication-based process, consisting of a comprehensive review of submitted materials followed by an interview.

  • Can the English proficiency test be waived if my previous degree was taught entirely in English?

Yes, provided that you submit an official certificate or letter from your prior institution, issued on official letterhead, explicitly stating that the language of instruction for your earned degree was English. The admissions committee will review the documentation and reserves the right to request a standardized test score (e.g., TOEFL iBT 100+ or IELTS Academic 7.0+) if the proof is deemed insufficient.

  • Is prior work experience mandatory for admission, particularly for professional master's programs?

No, prior work experience is not required for admission to any of our programs, including professional master's degrees.

However, we recognize the value of practical training in professional development. Throughout the program, we offer structured internship opportunities tailored to each student's field of study. These placements are designed to help students gain hands-on exposure to current market and technological demands, thereby strengthening their competitiveness in the job market upon graduation.

  • Is there an upper age limit for applicants?

No, there is no age limit for admission.

  • How can I check the status of my application after submission?

You will receive a confirmation email with a tracking number upon successful submission. Log in to the university’s online application portal to monitor your status. For delays or issues, contact the admissions office at sam-admissions@pku.edu.cn.

  • What is the estimated total cost for the entire duration of the program?

The estimated annual cost, including tuition, accommodation, and living expenses, is approximately RMB 60,000. Total cost varies by program length (typically 2–3 years for Master's and 4–5 years for PhD). Depending on the scholarship awarded, this amount may be fully or partially covered.

  • Are there scholarships available specifically for international students? Do I need to submit a separate application for the scholarship, or am I automatically considered?

Yes. A variety of scholarships are available for international students, including the Chinese Government Scholarships (CGS), Peking University International Students Scholarships, Guangdong Provincial Government International Students Scholarships, and SAM International Students Scholarships. Applicants are required to submit separate applications for these scholarships based on their individual eligibility and circumstances. Please refer to the respective scholarship guidelines for detailed application procedures and deadlines.

  • Is on-campus accommodation guaranteed for international students? If not, can the university assist with off-campus housing?

On-campus accommodation is available for international students, with room options including single, double, and triple occupancy. Housing fee coverage depends on the type of scholarship awarded—either fully or partially covered. Off-campus housing assistance is not provided, but our international student office can offer general guidance upon request.
