PROGRAM INFORMATION

In January 2001, Peking University and the Shenzhen Municipal People's Government co-founded the Shenzhen Graduate School of Peking University. After twenty-three years of development, the Shenzhen Graduate School, relying on Peking University and based in Shenzhen, has gradually become a research-oriented internationalized campus of Peking University rooted in Shenzhen, and an important part of Peking University's strategy of creating a world-class university.

Founded in 2013, the School of Materials adheres to the philosophy of “Peking University's tradition, Shenzhen's vitality”, and takes “contributing Shenzhen's wisdom and strength to Peking University's creation of a first-class School of Materials Science and Engineering” as its development goal. Through international cooperative basic research in frontier fields, industrial collaborative innovation in application fields and joint research in interdisciplinary fields, the School focuses on five major specialty directions, including advanced carbon materials, energy materials and materials genome engineering, organic photovoltaic and advanced display materials, new conceptual materials, and materials for life and health.

Applicants for master's and doctoral degree programs for foreign students in the School of New Materials, Graduate School of Peking University in Shenzhen, in addition to meeting the regulations and requirements set forth in the Peking University Admission Guidelines for Foreign Students in Graduate Schools (Campus-based) (based on the Guidelines for the current academic year in which the application is being made), they also have to satisfy the other requirements for each program in terms of application qualifications, application materials, English proficiency, and so on, which are described in detail in the enrollment instructions for the academic year of application of the respective colleges.

Programme Intended Learning Outcomes

Master of Materials Science and Engineering

Grasp the basic knowledge of materials synthesis, processing, characterization and performance research, and be able to skillfully apply the basic theories of materials physics and chemistry to make certain analysis and interpretation of the characteristics and properties of materials. Grasp the frontiers and dynamics of the development of materials science and engineering disciplines, be well versed in computer application technology, be able to solve problems in scientific research or practical work, and have the ability to carry out research work in materials science and engineering disciplines and related fields.

Master of Materials and Chemicals

Master the principles, advanced processes, technologies and tools in the field of materials engineering, and have the professional and technical ability and good professionalism to engage in the development of materials processes, devices and equipments; understand the basic knowledge and advanced technologies of materials synthesis, processing, composites and advanced manufacturing, and be familiar with the relevant norms of the industry field; understand the concept of innovative design, and be able to comprehensively apply the principles, processes, technologies and methods in the field of materials engineering to solve practical problems in related fields, and independently undertake engineering research and development work. I.The applicant must also fulfill the following basic requirements

1. Non-Chinese nationals with a valid foreign passport. For applicants applying as foreign students who are residents of mainland China (Mainland), Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), Macao Special Administrative Region (MSAR) and Taiwan who have immigrated and acquired a foreign nationality, they should be in possession of a valid foreign passport or a document certifying their nationality by April 30, 2019, and possess proof that they have cancelled their Chinese nationality.

Please Note: Whether an applicant with foreign nationality has the nationality of the People's Republic of China at the same time is subject to the conclusion of the nationality determination by the Exit-Entry Administration Department of the public security organs of China. If the applicant is found to have Chinese nationality after application, admission or enrollment, the eligibility for application, admission, enrollment or student status will be canceled.

2. Be physically and mentally healthy, of good character, with no criminal record, and willing to abide by Chinese laws and regulations as well as the rules and regulations of the school.

3. Postgraduates applying for master's degree should have a bachelor's degree conferred by an institution recognized by the Ministry of Education of China (skipping or intercalation during the undergraduate period is not accepted); special application conditions for individual professional degrees, such as Master of Public Administration, Master of Business Administration, Master of Business Administration for Senior Executives, Master of Laws, etc., shall be carried out with reference to the “Regulations on Administration of Enrollment of Postgraduate Students of Master's Degree Programs of the Whole Nation in 2025” o the Ministry of Education of China.

Postgraduate students applying for the doctoral degree should have a master's degree conferred by an institution recognized by the Ministry of Education of China. The Science and Technology Program accepts outstanding bachelor's degree holders to apply directly for doctoral degree. 

4. The applicant's academic performance, academic level and language ability must meet the admission requirements of the program of study applied for.

II.How to Apply

Log on to the Peking University International Student Online Service System (website http://www.studyatpku.com) to fill out the application and upload the following application materials:

1. Original degree certificate and degree certification report in Chinese or English language. If the degree certificate is a document in other languages, both the original and the notarized copy of the Chinese or English translation must be uploaded. In principle, applicants who have obtained their degree certificates from universities abroad must submit the degree authentication report from the Service Center for Scholarly Exchange of the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China. Applicants who have obtained their degree certificates from universities in Mainland China must in principle submit the degree authentication report from China Higher Education Student Information Network (Xuexin).

Please Note: Applicants who have already graduated must, in principle, submit a report certifying their degree certificate at the time of application. Fresh graduates are required to submit original certificates of expected graduation or certificates of enrolment at the time of application, and after being proposed for admission, they are required to submit additional documents certifying their academic degrees before enrolment.

2. Original or notarized official transcripts from your graduation institution, in Chinese or English.

3. Original personal statement. Briefly describe your academic background in the language of the program you are applying for and focus on your research plans during your graduate studies. 5. Two letters of recommendation from professors or associate professors (or experts with equivalent professional and technical titles) in the field of specialization applied for, in Chinese or English. The recommender will receive an email from the system after the applicant submits the email application, and can complete the online recommendation or upload a scanned copy of the recommendation letter signed by the recommender according to the instructions of the system. 6. Original language (Chinese or English) test transcripts:

(1) Applicants for disciplines taught in Chinese should submit transcripts or other relevant documents proving their Chinese language proficiency in accordance with the following standards. 

Please note: Those who have taken the new HSK Level 7-9 exam can submit the corresponding qualified score report.

(2) Applicants of English-taught majors (programs) whose native language is not English are required to submit TOEFL (iBT, 100 or above) or GRE (315 or above) transcripts or other proofs of their English proficiency. Specific requirements for English and Chinese language proficiency shall be based on the enrollment prospectus of each English-medium program.

7. Passport front page. The passport must be an ordinary passport that is still valid within three months of enrollment.

8. Personal research results. Catalogs and abstracts of published academic articles, other original research results, etc. (please provide if available).

9. Other supplementary documents required by the faculty. 

Please note: The originals of all the above supporting documents must be submitted as color scans after being clearly scanned by a scanner; documents taken by cell phones or cameras will not be accepted.

III.Preliminary examination of materials and retesting

1. The Academic Affairs Office of the School of New Materials, Shenzhen Graduate School of Peking University conducts a preliminary examination of the applicant's qualifications and application materials, and forwards the application materials of those who have passed the preliminary examination to the respective enrollment faculties.

2. The Admission Review and Admission Working Group organizes experts to focus on reviewing the materials of eligible applicants' past academic performance, academic foundation and cultivation potential, etc., and draws up a list of students who will be allowed to participate in the review on the basis of their merits.

3. Please pay attention to the notification on the official website. The specific format, requirements and schedule of the examination will be determined and announced by the faculty. Applicants should check the relevant announcement on the website of the faculty in time. The members of the review team will score the applicants independently on the spot and evaluate the applicants' professional quality, scientific research ability, language ability, innovative spirit and comprehensive quality.

I. Enrollment

Admitted students will complete the registration procedures and enroll at Peking University in late August 2025. The specific time will be announced in the admission notice. Admitted students must register at Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School with their valid passport, valid visa and admission letter at the designated time. All students should present their original degree certificates as required upon registration for the enrollment qualification review. Students with degree diplomas awarded by overseas universities should, in addition, submit the authentication report issued by the Chinese Service Center for Scholarly Exchange. Students who do not pass the enrollment qualification review will be disqualified from enrollment at Peking University.


II. Tuition Fees (per year per person) and Scholarships

Note: The evaluation of applicants for scholarships will be carried out in accordance with the relevant regulations of the government and the university. For more information, please refer to the International Student Division’s website.


III. Visa, Medical Insurance and Accommodation

Visa: Students admitted to PKU should apply for a student visa at the Chinese Embassy/Consulate in their country with the letter of admission and the JW201/202 form. International students who will study in China for over 6 months are required to obtain an “X1” visa, which will only be valid for 30 days upon arrival in China; upon arriving in China, they must come to the Exit and Entry Administration Bureau of Nanshan District and apply for a Residence Permit within 30 days in order to obtain a legal status in China.

Medical Insurance: The Ministry of Education of China stipulates that all international students must be medically insured throughout their entire planned period of study. Students are required to purchase the “Comprehensive Insurance Plan for Foreign Students” on the day of registration. Students who do not have valid medical insurance will not be allowed to register.

Accommodation: Accommodation will be provided to students at Yan Yuan Building No. 6, singular room, which costs RMB 1320 yuan per month. Please note that students who live off campus must register with the local police station within 24 hours of arrival.


IV. Graduation and Degree Awarding

Students who have completed all the requirements stipulated in the academic plan and passed their thesis defense upon completion of their study are permitted to graduate. After being examined and approved by the Academic Degree Assessment Committee of the university, the corresponding academic degree will be conferred. As the only PKU school operating in a different place, the degree certificate of PKUSZ graduates is approved and issued by Peking University.


V. Additional Notes

1) For further information about SAM, such as the school or department’s basic facilities, research, supervisors and faculty, subjects, research focus, training and grants, please refer to the relevant sections of our website.

2) Graduate students are NOT allowed to be enrolled in two or more programs/universities at the same time.

3) Applicants should actively pay close attention to the latest relevant information posted at the website or sent by the school. Applicants must read and follow the posted instructions/deadlines in a timely way; all consequences caused by the applicant’s personal negligence and other reasons shall be borne by the applicant himself/herself solely.

4) Issues that may arise which are not mentioned here will be handled in accordance with the relevant regulations of the university and higher authorities. If new graduate student admission policies are issued in the year 2025, Peking University will make corresponding adjustments and announce the changes in a timely way.
