【International Student Admissions】Admission Guidelines for International Graduate Students (Chinese-Taught Programs)

The School of Advanced Materials (SAM) at Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School will adopt an "application-assessment" selection process to recruit international students (hereinafter referred to as "international students") for master's and doctoral degree programs in 2025.

Our graduate admissions for international students uphold the principles of "fairness and justice, comprehensive evaluation, holistic assessment, and merit-based selection." The SAM focuses on key research areas including new energy materials, optoelectronic display materials, biomedical materials, functional structural materials, and carbon materials.

The duration of the master's program is 3 years. The doctoral program lasts either 4 or 5 years, while students holding only a bachelor's degree and directly pursuing a Ph.D. will follow a 5-year curriculum.


II. Application Prerequisite

1. Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens with a valid passport. Residents of the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Macau or Taiwan who have emigrated to another country and are applying to Peking University as international students must present valid passport or citizenship documents dating from before April 30, 2019, along with proof of cancellation of Chinese nationality.

Note: The exit and entry administration authority of the public security organ of China reserves the right to judge whether an applicant still has Chinese nationality. lf during the application period or even after the admission or registration the applicant is judged to be still holding Chinese nationality, his/her application admission, registration or even enrollment will be nullified.

2. Applicants should be healthy, both physically and psychologically, with no criminal record, and must abide by the laws and decrees of China and the regulations of Peking university.

3. Applicants for master’s degree programs must have attained a bachelor's degree from a university/college accredited by the Ministry of Education (MOE) of China. Admission will not be granted to those who skipped grades or transferred during undergraduate studies.

4. Applicants for doctoral programs must have attained a master’s degree from an institution accredited by the MOE of China. Outstanding applicants with a bachelor's degree may apply directly for doctoral studies.

5. Academic performance, academic level, and language ability should meet the admission requirements of the intended program.

IV. Application Procedures

Visit the Peking University International Student Service System: http://www.studyatpku.com, full in the application and upload the following documents:

1. Original degree certificates and authentication reports in Chinese or English. If the original documents are in another language, notarized translations in Chinese or English must also be submitted. Degree diplomas awarded by overseas universities must be authenticated by the Chinese Service Center for Scholarly Exchange (CSCSE). Degrees diplomas awarded by universities on the Chinese mainland must be authenticated by the Center for Student Services and Development, Ministry of Education, P. R. China (CSSD).

Note: Applicants who graduated before 2025 must upload their degree authentication report during the application period. Applicants expected to graduate in 2025 must provide an official letter from their current university stating their expected graduation date and submit their certificate of graduation upon being pre-admitted.

2. Official transcripts or notarized copies from the graduating institution, in Chinese or English.

5. Two recommendation letters from professors or associate professors (or equivalent experts) in the field of Materials Science and Engineering, in Chinese or English. Once applicants submit a request, the application system will send a link to the recommenders, and the recommenders should click the link and complete the recommendation either by filling out the form online or by uploading the scanned copy of the signed letter. 6. HSK certificate (Chinese Proficiency Test). Applicants must submit a score report with HSK Level 6 and a minimum of 200 points, with a writing (composition) score of no less than 65.

Note: Applicants who take HSK Levels 7–9 may also submit qualifying reports.

7. Passport bio page. The passport must be valid for at least three months after enrollment.

8. Research outputs. Include a list and abstracts of published academic papers, and other original research results (if any).

Note: Applicants should scan original or notarized application documents in color using a scanner. Images captured by a mobile phone or camera are NOT acceptable.


V. Preliminary Review and Interview

1. The International Students Office will conduct an initial eligibility review and forward approved applications to the SAM.

2. The School will convene an expert panel to review academic performance, research foundation, and development potential. Based on this review, a shortlist will be drawn for interview.

3. Interviews will be held between March and April 2025. Specific format, requirements, and schedules will be announced separately. Applicants should check announcements on the school website: https://sam.pkusz.edu.cn. The panel will independently score applicants based on academic qualifications, research ability, language proficiency, innovation, and overall quality.


VI. Admission

1. Peking University will evaluate applicants based on the preliminary review, interview performance, and departmental recommendation, and finalize the list of proposed admissions.

2. Departments will announce the proposed admissions by the end of May. Please follow updates from the school.

3. Admitted applicants must mail or deliver the original printed application form and other original documents (excluding degree certificates and recommendation letters) to the SAM before May 31, 2025.

4. The International Students Office will confirm and notify admitted students and is expected to issue admission documents in late June 2025.


VII. Enrollment

New students are expected to register in August 2025, with the exact date specified in the admission letter. Admitted students must report on time with their passport, study visa, and admission notice. Degree certificates must be presented for verification. For overseas degrees, the original degree authentication report from CSCSE must also be submitted. Those failing to meet admission requirements will be disqualified.


VIII. Tuition and Scholarships

1. Tuition

· Master’s program (full-time): RMB 33,000/year

· Doctoral program (full-time): RMB 40,000/year

2. Scholarships

· Chinese Government Scholarship (High-Level Graduate Program): Covers tuition, accommodation, medical insurance, and provides monthly living stipends.

· School of Advanced Materials Scholarship: For those not awarded the government scholarship, the School may offer partial support.


IX. Visa, Insurance, and Accommodation

Admitted students must apply for a study visa at Chinese embassies/consulates with the admission notice and JW201/JW202 form. Students studying more than 6 months must apply for an X1 visa and convert it into a residence permit within 30 days of arrival in China.

According to MOE regulations, all international students must purchase Chinese domestic medical insurance. Students without valid insurance will not be registered.

The university will arrange on-campus accommodation in Shenzhen for international students.


X. Graduation and Degree Conferral

Students who fulfill the curriculum requirements, pass all assessments, and successfully defend their thesis will be granted graduation. The degree will be conferred upon approval by the university's Academic Degree Evaluation Committee.


XI. Other Information

1. Dual enrollment in more than one graduate program is not permitted.

2. Applicants are responsible for staying updated with university notifications. Failure to do so will be at the applicant's own risk.

3. Matters not covered in this guide will follow relevant national and university policies.
