High School Students Get Hands-on Experience at SAM Labs

To promote the spirit of science, fulfill the social service mission of universities, and facilitate effective connection between higher education and basic education, on December 1, 2025, the School of Advanced Materials (SAM) at Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School organized a scientific research visit and practice activity themed “Dreaming of Scientific Research, Setting Sail for the Future” for students from Peking University Affiliated High School Shenzhen. Leveraging its disciplinary strengths in materials science and analytical testing, the college transformed cutting-edge research instruments into open teaching resources, creating an authentic scientific exploration environment for middle and high school students.

During the activity, students were divided into groups and entered the school’s laboratories. Under the guidance and explanation of Assistant Professor Hao Pan, Ms. Zenglin Li from the Analytical Testing Center, and student volunteers Xianya Wang and Chengyi Huang, they systematically learned the basic principles and applications of a series of large-scale research instruments, including optical microscopes, X-ray diffractometers, and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometers. With hands-on operation of the equipment, observation of experimental phenomena, and recording and analysis of results under the instructors’ supervision, the students experienced the complete process from sample preparation to data acquisition. This allowed them to deeply feel how “hands-on practice” and “critical thinking” are closely integrated in materials science research.

From theory to practice, from observation to analysis the students deepened their understanding of material structure and performance characterization techniques in a real research environment. They gradually developed a scientific mindset that values detail, respects data, and pursues evidence-based conclusions, taking an important first step from classroom learning toward genuine scientific practice.

This activity represents a concrete effort by the school to promote seamless integration between senior high school and university education and the fusion of science and education. In the future, the SAM will continue to open its laboratories to middle and high schools, design age-appropriate teaching modules, actively fulfill its social responsibility in science popularization and innovative talent cultivation, and contribute the wisdom and disciplinary strength of Peking University.
