On April 26, 2025, the Shenzhen-Hongkong Hetao INnovation and cEnter of Science (SHINES) at Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School was officially inaugurated. The unveiling ceremony was witnessed by Mr. Leung Chun-ying, Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and the fourth Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region; Guangcai He, Secretary of the CPC Peking University Committee; Jin Zhang, Member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Committee of Peking University, Executive Vice President of Peking University, and Dean of the Shenzhen Graduate School; as well as officials from the Hetao Development Authority.

In September 2023, the Shenzhen Municipal Government and Peking University signed the “Comprehensive Cooperation Agreement” to deepen strategic collaboration. As a strategic expansion project of Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School, the SHINES aims to promote deep integration of industry, academia, and research, foster synergy between technological innovation and industrialization, and support national strategies for scientific and technological advancement. The Center was officially registered in May 2024 in the Hetao Shenzhen Zone.

Located on the 23rd floor of Building A, Hetao Innovation Center, SHINES is positioned to integrate Peking University’s strengths in fundamental research with the collaborative innovation ecosystem of Shenzhen and Hong Kong. The Center will serve as a talent hub for high-level professionals, an international exchange platform, and an incubation base for AI-driven new productive forces under the auspices of PKU Shenzhen. Leveraging the combined advantages of Peking University and the Hetao area, SHINES is committed to building a world-class scientific innovation platform. It will focus on key fields such as materials science and engineering and integrated circuits, with research efforts targeting cutting-edge areas including intelligent design of new materials and in-memory computing chips. The Center will conduct interdisciplinary fundamental research and tackle key technological challenges with significant leading potential.
