About the Host Department
The Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) at Peking University was established in 2005 and has since grown into a global leader in the field. MSE is currently ranked among the top 0.1% of institutions in the ESI global ranking, 6th in the world in the US News Best Materials Science subject ranking, and 15th globally in the QS subject ranking.
Established in 2013, the School of Advanced Materials (SAM) at Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School is an emerging academic unit that integrates Peking University’s distinguished traditions with Shenzhen’s spirit of innovation. Serving as the southern base of MSE and a core platform for Peking University’s emerging engineering initiatives and industry development in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, SAM offers unique opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration and translational research.
Together, MSE and SAM are dedicated to cutting-edge research across energy materials, optoelectronic materials, biomaterials, composite materials, and emerging materials. About the "M-Talents" Summer School
Launched in 2023, the "M-Talents" Summer School is designed to foster academic exchange and cultural integration between Chinese and international students. The program offers a carefully curated academic experience, combining high-quality courses, laboratory visits, and hands-on activities tailored for undergraduate students from around the world.
Participants will not only engage in academic discussions and intellectual exchanges but also experience the rich cultural heritage of China. Through a variety of cultural activities, you will have the chance to explore Chinese traditions, connect with like-minded individuals from diverse backgrounds, and create lasting memories. This summer, let your journey be defined by learning, connection, and discovery.
I. Courses & Activities
1. Frontier Discipline Lectures + Laboratory Visits: Gain insights from leading researchers and explore advanced scientific equipment in state-of-the-art laboratories.
2. Research Institute Visits: Engage in face-to-face discussions with researchers, learn about their work, and gain a deeper understanding of cutting-edge developments in the field.
3. Enterprise Visits & Workshops: Step into industry settings to see how academic theories are applied in real-world contexts, and gain hands-on experience.
4. Introductory Chinese Language Course: Discover the beauty of the Chinese language through beginner-friendly lessons that will help you navigate daily life and deepen your cultural experience.
5. Cultural Excursions: Explore China’s rich history and traditions through guided tours and immersive cultural experiences.
II. Key Information
- Language of Instruction
English will be used throughout the program, ensuring that language is no barrier to academic exchange and collaboration.
- Program Dates
July 18 – July 29, 2026
This 12-day summer program is divided into two parts:
・Beijing Campus (July 18 – July 25): All participants will gather at PKU’s historic Beijing campus, where they will explore Yenching Garden and immerse themselves in the academic and cultural atmosphere of this renowned institution.
・Shenzhen Campus (July 26 – July 29): A select group of participants will have the opportunity to continue the program at PKU’s Shenzhen campus, where they will engage with cutting-edge technology and innovation in one of China’s most dynamic cities.
III. Eligibility
We welcome applications from:
・High school graduates with a strong interest in materials science.
・Undergraduate and graduate students with a background in science and engineering.
Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in English or Chinese by submitting relevant certificates to ensure smooth communication throughout the program.

The online application system will only be open during this period. Late submissions will not be accepted.
- Application Steps
1. Visit http://www.studyatpku.com to begin your application.
2. Register for an account using a valid email address.
After registration, a confirmation email will be sent to your email address. All future communications regarding the program will also be sent to this email.
3. Log in to your account, select "Application," and choose the "PKU 'M-Talents' Summer School" program.
4. Complete all required sections of the application form.
Note for Basic Information: Please upload a recent headshot photo in JPG/PNG/GIF/BMP format, with dimensions of 640x480 pixels and a file size of less than 1 MB.
5. Submit your application.
After submission, you can check your application status in the portal. Admission decisions will be communicated via email.
V. Fees and Payment
- Registration Fee
Free of charge. We are committed to making this opportunity accessible to all aspiring young scholars.
- Tuition Fees
・Self-Funded Students: $600 USD
・Scholarship Students: $100 USD (Exceptional applicants will be notified of their scholarship eligibility via email.)
Please Note:
The tuition fee does not include round-trip airfare. However, it does include:
・On-campus accommodation at PKU (twin or triple rooms, shared with fellow participants).
・Meals during the program.
・All course-related fees.
VI. Insurance Requirements
In accordance with Chinese regulations and PKU policies, all international participants are required to purchase health insurance that covers the entire duration of the program. This insurance may be purchased in your home country or internationally. Proof of insurance must be provided prior to arrival.
